Service and Community Outreach Opportunities
If you have any questions about any of the following programs, please contact the Leadership Team.
1) Durham Rescue Mission tutoring
We currently have a tutoring program for the school-aged children living at the Durham Rescue Mission. Every Thursday evening from 6:00-7:15pm, a small group of us have been going to help the kids there with their homework and to give them additional enrichment in reading and math. We also try to have some time to just hang out and play with the kids. We’ve also started partnering with a group from the Church of the Good Shepherd that tutors on Tuesday evenings. If you’d like to help out on either Tuesday or Thursday night, please let Hansford know. The kids have really enjoyed having us there and it’s a lot of fun for us too :)
2) A Helping Hand
If you prefer to work with a more mature age group, the organization “A Helping Hand” is looking for volunteers to help with their program. Basically, volunteers will be paired up with senior citizens in the local area who may be in need of assistance with household chores, running errands, or simply wanting companionship. It’s a really great way to develop friendships with people living out in the surrounding community and also meet some of their needs.
3) Freedom House
The Freedom House in Chapel Hill provides housing and a recovery program for individuals with drug/alcohol addictions. They are in need of volunteers willing to help with database entry and other office work. The tasks are usually pretty simple, but they appear to be a little short staffed and could use a little help in the office.
